The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is a Republic situated in southern Asia. It has a coastline along the Arabian Sea, and is bordered by India to the East, Afghanistan to the north-west, Iran to the south west and China to the north east. Its capital is Islamabad. After independence in 1947, Pakistan became an Islamic Republic in 1956. A civil war in 1971 resulted in the breakaway of East Pakistan as the new country of Bangladesh.
Since 1947 Pakistan has issued its own stamps and joined the Universal Postal Union in that year. The country issued its first stamps in that year from the British India series of King George VI which were overprinted with the name “Pakistan”. Pakistan stamps have a very long and interesting history, unfortunately too long to précis here, but it is really worth a read.
