Albania was part of the Turkish Empire until it was declared independent in 1912 and became a Republic in 1925. After being occupied by first Italy and then Germany during the 2nd World War, the country became known as the People’s Republic of Albania in 1946. The People’s Republic was dissolved in 1991 and since then the country has been known as the Republic of Albania.
The country is situated in south eastern Europe. It has sea borders with the Ionian and Adriatic Seas. Its land borders are with Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, northern Macedonia in the east and Greece to the south. The capital city is Tirana.
The first stamps were issued in 1913. Postage stamps from Albania are inscribed Shqiperia, Shqiperise and Shqiptare.
