Angola is a country in Southern Africa, bordered to the South by Namibia, to the north and east by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the East by Zambia, and to the West by the Atlantic Ocean.  Its capital is Luanda.  The country became independent from Portugal  in 1975, but immediately there was a civil war which lasted until 2002.  Since then it has been a relatively peaceful unitary presidential republic.

The economy of Angola is based on mineral and petroleum and it has a very fast growing economy.  Like many African nations, there is large scale corruption and the wealth is concentrated in the hands of a very small percentage, with the majority of the population living below the breadline.  Life expectancy and infant mortality rates are amongst the worst in the world.

The first stamps were issued in 1870, showing the Portuguese crown in a design which was common to all its colonies.  The first stamp of the independent Republic of Angola appeared in 1975.  Since 1990, large numbers of stamp designs are issued every year.
