Armenia was temporarily independent after the Russian Revolution of 1917. In 1920 Armenia, Azerbajan and Georgia made up the Transcaucasian Federation. In 1922 the countries of the federation became part of the Soviet Union. In 1991, Armenia once again became independent.
The first stamps of Armenia were all hand overprints on Russian stamps in 1919. Many varieties of these overprints exist, but also many forgeries. In 1922 many stamps were printed, but never issued. From 1924 until 1991 stamps of the USSR were used.
