A part of Antarctica which is referred to as the Australian Antarctic Territory, was claimed by the United Kingdom and placed under the authority of Australia in 1933. Only the UK, New Zealand, France and Norway recognize Australia’s sovereignty over this piece of Antarctica. Japan does not recognise Australia’s claim to the Antarctic waters in which Japanese ships carry out whaling operations.
Since 1957 Australia has issued stamps for this territory, usually with an Antarctic theme. All are valid for postage in both Australia and the Antarctic territory.
