Cambodia (also Kampuchea) is a country located in southeast Asia. It is bordered by Thailand in the northwest, Laos in the northeast, Vietnam in the east and the Gulf of Thailand in the southwest. The capital is Phnom Penh. The official religion is Buddhism.
In 1953 Cambodia gained independence from France. In 1970 there was a coup which installed the right wing pro-US Khmer Republic. After years of political insecurity, in 1997 the Cambodian People’s Party came to power and today this party still rules the country.
Initially Cambodia used the stamps of Indochina. In 1951 the first stamps were issued for the Kingdom of Cambodia (Royaume du Cambodge).
After the Khmer Republic was formed in 1970, stamps were issued, inscribed Republique Khmer from 1971 until 1975. The postal system was abolished in 1975 when the National United Front of Kampuchea took over the country. Postal service was only resumed in 1979 when the Khmer Rouge were driven out of the country. 1980 saw the issue of the first stamps after the establishment of the People;s Republic of Kampuchea. This name was changed back to Cambodia in 1989.
