The Republic of Cameroon is situated on the west coast of Central Africa. Its capital is Yaounde. It is bordered by Nigeria to the west, Chad to the northeast, the Central African Republic to the east, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Republic of Congo to the south. French and English are the official languages, but the country is home to more than 1738 linguistic groups. In 1961, Cameroon gained independence from France.
In 1884, Cameroon became a German Protectorate and used postage stamps from Germany in 1897 and 1900 overprinted with Kamerun. For some time after independence, stamps from Nigeria were overprinted with Cameroon. In 1995, the country joined the British Commonwealth. Today stamp issues vary in language used. Some may be in French, Republique du Cameroun and others in English, Republic of Cameroon.
