The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory situated in the western Caribbean just south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica. There are three islands, namely Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The capital is George Town. It is a major offshore banking haven for the wealthy.
The island has never levied income tax, capital gains tax or wealth taxes and is thus a very popular tax haven. Hurricane Ivan damaged 83% of the buildings and homes on the island in 2004. It was the worst hurricane to hit the island in 86 years. The territory has had to deal with more hurricanes than any other area in the Atlantic basin.
In 1889 the territory started using Jamaican stamps. These stamps were valid until 1901. From 1900 the Caymans issued their own stamps.
