Central Lithuania (Srodkowa Litwa) was a small republic in the Baltic region, situated between Lithuania and Poland. Its capital was Vilnius. It was never recognised internationally and only existed from 1920 – 1922. In 1922 an election took place and Poland claimed the country.
The first stamps of Central Lithuania were issued in 1920 and consisted of surcharged stamps of Lithuania. The surcharge was in Markka which was the currency of Poland and the words “Srodkova Litwa” and “Polska” appeared on the stamps. A coat of arms was also on the stamps.
