The Republic of Chad is a landlocked country in Central Africa. Bordered by Libya in the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest and Niger to the west, its capital is N’Djamena. Chad became one of the separate colonies of French Equatorial Africa in 1937 and in 1958 became a Republic within the French community. Chad has suffered political violence for many years. It is one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in the world.
Just before independence in 1959, Chad issued its first stamps omitting the letters RF (“Republique Francaise), and in 1961, three stamps were issued to celebrate admission to the United Nations.
