Christmas Island is an Australian overseas territory. It is located in the Indian Ocean about 350km south of Java and about 1550km northwest of the nearest point on the Australian mainland. It only covers an area of 135 sq. kilometres and has a population of just less than 2000. Most of the inhabitants live on the northern tip of the island. The main settlement is Flying Fish Cove. The majority of the population is of Chinese, Malay and Indian descent.
The island was placed under Australian control in 1958 but the island issued its own stamps. It was postally and philatelically independent until 1993 after which Australia Post took over the postal administration. From 1993 stamps issued by Australia Post are valid in Australia as are Australian stamps valid on Christmas Island.
