Comoros-Flag-and-Coat

The Comoros is an island country situated in the Indian Ocean. From 1977 to 1979 it was known as the Republic of Comores, then from 1979 to 2000 as the Federal Islamic Republic of Comores, and since then the country has been known as the Union of the Comoros.

The country which consists of three main islands and some smaller ones as well is situated east of the northern border of Mozambique and northwest of the island of Mayotte.  Despite Comoros wanting to include Mayotte, this island remains an overseas department of France.   The capital and largest city of the Comores is Moroni.  The official state religion is Sunni Islam and the majority of the population practise this religion.

It is the 4th smallest nation in Africa and has a population under 1 million.  It is the only country in the Arab world which is entirely in the southern Hemisphere.

After independence in 1975, stocks of postage stamps were overprinted “Etat comorien” to strike any mention of French sovereignty. In two years, under president Ali Soilih, more stamps were issued than during the whole period of the Comorian archipelago (1946 – 1975).
