The Republic of Congo is situated in Central Africa and should not be confused with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It has Gabon and the Atlantic Ocean as its western border, Cameroon to the northwest, the Central African Republic to the northeast and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the east and south. To the south west is Cabinda, a small stretch of land belonging to Angola. In 1960, this former French colony gained independence, but was ruled as a Marxist-Leninist one party state from 1970 – 1991, after which multi party elections have been held. Its economy is based on its oil production.
The first stamps of the independent Republic of Congo were issued in 1958. Before that stamps of the French Congo were issued.
