Croatia is a country situated on the Adriatic Sea. It has borders with Slovenia and Hungary in the north, Serbia and Montenegro in the east and the Adriatic Sea forms its west coast.
After World War I, it was part of the State of the Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, which became part of the Republic of Yugoslavia. In 1991, Croatia became an independent Republic.
In 1919, Croatia overprinted Hungarian stamps with “Hrvatska SHS”. (State of the Slovenes, Croats and Serbs). In 1919, the country used its own stamps printed “Hrvatska”, but from 1921, Yugoslav stamps were used by all states forming the Republic.
In 1941 Croatia established an independent state and Yugoslav stamps were issued overprinted “Nezavisna Drzava Hrvatska” (Independent State of Croatia). The same year the “state” printed its own stamps. From 1945, stamps of Yugoslavia were used. On gaining independence once again in 1991, Croatia began issuing its own stamps.
