The Republic of Equatorial Guinea is a small country on the west coast of Central Africa comprising the Rio Muni mainland as well as some islands. The insular portion consists of the island of Bioko (formerly Fernando Po) and Annobon, a volcanic island which is the only part of the country south of the Equator. Malabo, the capital is situated on Bioko island. The mainland is bordered by Cameroon in the north and Gabon in the south and east. Bata, the largest city and planned future capital, is situated on the mainland. It is the only state in Africa where Spanish is the official language. The country is one of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest oil producers as a result of which it is the richest country per capita in Africa. However, as in the case of many other nations, the wealth is very unevenly distributed, with most of the population living below the breadline.
The country became an independent republic in October 1968 and has been issuing its own stamps since then.
According to the Stanley Gibbons Simplified Catalogue Stamps of the World, Vol. 1, 1995 Edition, the stamps listed below were either issued in excess of postal needs or were not available to the public in reasonable quantities at face value. These stamps may later be given a full listing if there is evidence of regular postal use.
