Eritrea is a small country situated in North East Africa bordering the Red Sea. Its neighbours are Sudan in the north west, Ethiopia in the south, and a small border with Djibouti in the south east. Its capital is Asmara. The country was known as Italian Eritrea until 1942, but after the defeat of the Italian army, it was administered by the British until 1952. Although it formed part of Ethiopia, there was a continuous struggle for independence and eventually in 1991, the country became independent.
The first stamps, overprinted stamps of Italy were issued in 1893. For the next hundred years, stamps were issued with various overprints, depending on which country Eritrea was allied to. Only after the referendum leading to total independence in 1993, did Eritrea issue its own stamps.
