French Southern and Antarctic Territory

The French Southern and Antarctic Territory  has no permanent civilian population.  At the most there are 300 people on these islands.  The area was created in August 1955 before which the areas were dependencies of Madagascar.  It consists of:

Adele Land (the French claim to Antarctica)

Crozet Islands (a group of islands south of Madagascar)

Kerguelen Islands (a group of volcanic islands in the south eastern Indian Ocean)

St Paul and Amsterdam Islands, north of Kerguelen Islands

The Scattered Islands, a group of  islands dotted around Madagascar

The area became a UNESCO Heritage site in July 2019.

Stamps of Madagascar were used from 1948 to 1955.  From 1955, the stamps were inscribed TERRES AUSTALES ET ANTARCTIQUES FRANCAISES.
