The Republic of Haiti is situated in the Caribbean Sea. It shares almost half of the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. Its capital is Port-au-Prince. In the 17th Century its sugar cane plantations made it a very wealthy country, albeit slave labour was used, so the wealth was in the hands of a small percentage of the population. Due to revolts by the slaves in the 18th Century, an independent country was created, free of Spanish or French rule. Unfortunately the country has been racked by civil wars and remains a very poor country. Occupation by the United States in the 20th Century for long periods has just added to the political instability. More recently, tropical storms, hurricanes and earthquakes have affected the country very negatively and poverty is rife.
In 1881, Haiti issued its first stamp with the figure of Liberty. Postal communication was needed in the 19th century to help trade. Great Britain had Post Offices in Haiti from 1865 to 1881. The post offices used British stamps during this period. Like many other countries, its history is shown on its stamps.
