Hawaii, a group of islands in the central Pacific, was independent until 1893, when the monarchy was overthrown. It was an independent republic from 1894 until 1898 when it became a territory of the United States. It became a US state in 1959.
The Hawaiian Missionary Series were the first stamps of Hawaii and were issued in 1851. These stamps were found mainly on mail from missionaries hence the name. These stamps are very rare and their catalogue values are very high. The last stamps for Hawaii were issued in 1899 and they were superseded by stamps of the United States.
