Today Johor is a Malaysian state located in the south of the Malaysian Peninsula. In 1885, Sultan Abu Bakar was recognised by Queen Victoria as the Sultan of Johor. Under his leadership Johor enjoyed economic prosperity. In 1914 Johor became a crown protectorate of Great Britain as part of the Unfederated Malay States and in 1959, it became part of the Federation of Malaya and since 1963 has been part of Malaysia.
Johor was the first Malayan state to issue stamps in 1876.
