Since 1945, Korea has been divided into two separate countries: North Korea and South Korea. North Korea has boundaries with China in the north west and Russia in the north east. Its capital is Pyongyang. South Korea is a peninsula surrounded by the Yellow Sea, the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan. It has a land border to the north with North Korea. Its capital is Seoul.
Both North Korea and South Korea have issued stamps since 1946. The wording on the North Korean stamps is mostly Korean, with the term “KPR Korea” written in English. An interesting fact about the North Korean stamps is that until the Railway Locomotive series of 1976, all stamps were ungummed. Thereafter most stamps were gummed.
