Libya is a large country situated in North Africa bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It is the 4th largest country in Africa. Egypt and Sudan form the eastern borders, Chad and Niger, the southern borders and Algeria and Tunisia, the western borders. It is made up of three historical regions, Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan. Its capital is Tripoli.
The independent Kingdom of Libya was formed in 1949. This was after it had been part of Italy and then occupied by British forces at the end of the 2nd World War. The first stamps of the independent country were overprinted stamps of Cyrenaica issued in 1951. In 1969, the King was deposed in a military coup. Stamps including the word “Kingdom” were altered in many ways to delete that word. At first stamps marked “LAR” were issued, and from the 1970’s the stamps were inscribed Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya with the same words inscribed in Arabic.
