The Republic of Lithuania is situated in the Baltic region of north eastern Europe. Latvia lies to the north, Belarus to the east and Poland to the south. The Baltic Sea is its north west sea border. The capital is Vilnius. Lithuania became independent from Russia in 1918. During the 2nd World War the country was occupied by the Soviet Union and then by Nazi Germany. Towards the end of the war, it was again occupied by the Soviet Union. In 1990 Lithuania became the first Soviet Republic to once again declare independence.
The first Lithuanian stamps were issued in 1918. After 1940 the Lithuanian stamps were replaced by stamps of the Soviet Union. After 1990, Lithuania once again issued its own stamps.
