Lourenco Marques was a district of the Portuguese colony of Mocambique and in 1898 it became the capital of the territory. The first stamps of Lourenco Marques were issued in 1895. Many more were issued with overprints especially after the establishment of the Republic in Portugal. From 1920, the stamps of Lourenco Marques were superseded by those of Mocambique.
