
The Federation of Malaya became independent in 1957. In 1963, Malaya united with North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore to become Malaysia. In 1965 Singapore was expelled from Malaysia. The capital and largest city is Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy with the king as head of state and the head of government is the prime minister.
Malaysia started issuing stamps after independence from the United Kingdom in 1957. The stamps had Malayan Federation until 1963 when Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore joined Malaya to form Malaysia. Singapore became independent of Malaysia in 1963. From 1979, Malaysia issued stamps for the federal territories. From 1986, these issues were inscribed “Wilayah Persekutuan” which means Federal Territories.
