The Republic of Mali is a large landlocked country in West Africa. To the west it has land borders with Mauritania, Senegal and Guinea, to the south is the Ivory Coast and Burkino Faso, to the east Niger, and to the north Algeria. The capital is Bamako. More than 90% of the population are Muslims. At the beginning of the 20th century, France made Mali part of the Sudan. The country became independent in 1959 as the Mali Federation, then in 1960 as the Mali Republic. Since then there has been a lot of conflict, even though 1991 saw the establishment of Mali as a democratic, multi party country. France has been involved in helping the country to achieve real democracy.
The stamp issues over the years show the political uncertainty in the country.
At the end of the 19th century, stamps of the French colonies were used, from 1903 stamps were marked “Senegambia and Niger”, then from 1906, the stamps were marked “Upper Senegal and Niger”. In 1920 this country became Sudan, with certain regions called Upper Volta and Niger. Eventually in 1959, Mali issued its own stamps, first as the Mali Federation and in 1960 as the Mali Republic.
