Mauritania is situated in the north-west Africa. Two thirds of the country is desert. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean in the west, Western Sahara in the north, Algeria in the north-east, Mali in the east and south-east and Senegal in the north-west. It is a former French colony which gained independence in 1960. Its capital is Nouakchott.
Mauritania’s first stamps were issued in 1906. Stamps at that time showed the name of the territory as well as “Afrique Occidentale Francaise”. The first stamps of the independent Mauritania were issued from 1960.
