Morocco

The Kingdom of Morocco is situated at the tip of North Africa with borders on both the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.  To the southwest is Western Sahara, to the south Mauritania and to the east Algeria.  In 1912 it was divided into a French and Spanish protectorate, but regained its independence in 1956.  It claimed Western Sahara as one of its southern provinces by annexing the territory in 1975, but there was a guerrilla war until 1991, and since then peace processes have not been successful.  Its capital is Rabat.

After attaining independence in 1956, Morocco regained postal autonomy.  Stamps printed for everyday usage had a picture of the king of Morocco.  Stamps marked “Republica Saharaui or Sahara Occ. or Sahara Occ. R.A.S.D.” relate to the territory to the south of the country which has caused a dispute for many years which has not been resolved.  The Moroccan Post Office does not regard these stamps as legitimate.
