After the 2nd World War and the defeat of Germany, the Saar Protectorate was administered by France from 1947 until 1956 when it was returned to Germany in 1956.
The first stamps valid only for the Saar region were issued in January 1947. Initially they were in German denominations, but from November 1947, this changed to French denominations. In 1948, the stamps were inscribed “Saarpost”. Only after 1956, did the stamps show Deutsche Bundespost.
