Spanish Morocco

Spanish Morocco was a protectorate of Spain from 1912-1956.  It consisted of the northern strip and the southern part of what is today Morocco.  At the same time, the middle section of Morocco was a protectorate of France.

Before Morocco was divided into protectorates of Spain and France, the postal services consisted of offices abroad from France, Germany, Great Britain and Spain and an internal postal service called Sharifian post.  Once the protectorate was formed, the Spanish set up a regular postal service in Morocco.  Throughout Morocco, the Sharifian post offices merged with the French Offices in 1913 and stamps issued by the Sharifian post were valid for use in both Spanish and French Morocco until 1915.  The French offices closed in 1917, the German in 1919, but the British offices remained open until independence in 1956.
