
The United Republic of Tanzania is situated in central East Africa. It is bordered to the north by Kenya and Uganda, to the west by the Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and to the south by Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. It has a sea border in the east with the Indian Ocean. The country of Tanzania was formed in 1964 by the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar which were part of the British Commonwealth. A third of its area is covered by national parks. Since 1996 its capital has been Dodoma.
After World War I, the area of German East Africa came under British rule and was named Tanganyika. Stamps were issued under the name of Tanganyika until its union with Zanzibar. The first stamps of the republic, were issued in 1964 inscribed United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Until 1976 the stamps of Tanzania were valid in Kenya and Uganda.
