The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory situated in the West Indies just north of the the Dominican Republic and east of Cuba. Initially reliant on salt extraction as its main income, the island is now known for tourism and as an offshore financial centre. The capital is Cockburn Town.
The first stamp of the Turks Islands was issued in 1867 and was the one penny red. The first stamp of the Turks and Caicos Islands was issued in 1900. The country participated in many of the issues specific to the British colonies. After 1959, stamps were issued to commemorate the new constitution and since 1970 the stamps issued have been aimed at the collectors’ market.
