The Republic of Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. It was ruled by one of Africa’s most eccentric leaders, Idi Amin Dada from 1971-1980. During his rule he carried out mass killings so that he could remain as the leader of the country. Between 80 000 and 500 000 people were killed during his rule. To the north is Sudan, to the east Kenya, to the south Rwanda and to the west, the Democratic Republic of Congo. It capital is Kampala. From 1894 it was a British Protectorate, but gained independence in 1962.
From 1903 until independence in 1962 Ugandan stamps were issued under different postal agencies.
