
The United Arab Emirates is a country situated at the south east end of the Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf. The country is a sovereign constitutional monarchy which is a federation consisting of 7 emirates, namely Abu Dhabi (which serves as the capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah,, Sharjah and Umm al Qiwain. Each emirate is governed by a ruler. One of the rulers serves as the President of the United Arab Emirates.
Before 1973, each emirate issued its own stamps. A Union Postal Administration had come into being in 1972 and from the beginning of 1973 stamps were issued in the name of the United Arab Emirates.
