Uruguay, officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay is situated in South America. To the west is Argentina, to the north and east is Brazil, to the south is the Rio de la Plata (River of Silver) and the Atlantic Ocean is its southeastern border. Its capital is Montevideo. It returned to civilian government in 1985 after 12 years of dictatorship. Throughout the 19th century the country was subjected to foreign influence from Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Brazil and the military played a large role in domestic politics for nearly the whole of the 20th century. The country is a republic and is ranked first in Latin America in democracy, peace and lack of corruption. It is a very progressive nation and was named “country of the year” in 2013 for its innovation in many fields.
The first regular series of stamps was issued in 1859. Some of the first cast iron red pillar boxes imported from England in 1879, are still in use today and in 1993, the Penfold post boxes which were hexagonal in shape, were commemorated with a new set of stamps.
