The Republic of Uzbekistan is situated in central Asia. It is surrounded by five landlocked countries: Kazakhstan to the north, Kyrgyztan to the southeast, Tajikistan to the south east, Afghanistan to the south and Turkmenistan to the southwest. Together with Liechtenstein it is only one of two doubly landlocked countries in the world. Its capital is Tashkent.
The country has been an independent republic since 1991 and the first stamps were issued in 1992. In 1993 and 1995 when supplies of stamps were low, the government overprinted stamps of the Soviet Union.1993
