The Republic of Vanuatu is an island country situated in the South Pacific Ocean.  Under the name of the New Hebrides, the country was managed from 1906 by both France and the United Kingdom.  During the 1970’s an independence movement was started and the country became independent as Vanuatu in 1980.

The first stamps issued after independence were those of New Hebrides inscribed Vanuatu.  Thereafter Vanuatu used its own stamps.
