Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands are part of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean lying to the east of Puerto Rico.  The islands to the north are the British Virgin Islands and the islands to the south are the US Virgin Islands.  This introduction is about the British Virgin Islands whose capital is Road Town and whose official name is the Virgin Islands.  The British took control of the islands in 1672 and retained influence ever since.  Since 1950, the islands voted to manage their own affairs.  Today the British Virgin Islands is one of the world’s leading offshore financial centres.

In 1858 a small supply of stamps was issued by Great Britain depicting Queen Victoria.  They were cancelled by an A13 postmark and are extremely rare.
