The Republic of Yemen is situated in western Asia at the bottom of the Arabian Peninsula. Its border to the north is Saudi Arabia, and to the west, Oman. The Gulf of Aden is its southern coastal border and the Red Sea is western coastal border. More than 200 islands form part of the country. The capital is Sana. The city of Aden (once an independent territory) is also situated in the south of this country.

Before 1990, the country was divided into two, North and South Yemen. During the civil war in North Yemen from 1962 until 1970, stamps from both the Kingdom of Yemen and the Arab Republic of Yemen were issued. From 1967, in southern Yemen, the stamps were issues of the People’s Republic of Southern Yemen. Although stamps from the People’s Republic and the Arab Republic were issued until 1992, from 1990, stamps of the new united Republic of Yemen slowly took over.
