Originally the Belgian Congo, the Republic of Zaire was the name of a sovereign state in central Africa which existed from 1971 until 1997. The capital was Kinshasa. Today the country is known as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The first stamps of Zaire were issued in 1971. Stamps issues of Zaire were discontinued in 1993.
