The Alaouites was a coastal district of Syria placed under French mandate in 1920. In 1930 it became the Republic of Latakia and was incorporated into Syria in 1937.
In 1925 French stamps were issued, overprinted ALAOUITES, followed by the denomination in piastres, followed by the same information in Arabic. Later, between 1925 and 1930, Syrian stamps were used with similar overprints.
