The Azores is Portugal’s second autonomous region (the other is Madeira). The Azores consists of 9 volcanic islands situated in the North Atlantic Ocean north of Madeira.
The first stamps of the Azores appeared in 1868 and continued until 1930. From 1980, the use of separate stamps for the Azores and Madeira was revived. The modern stamps are inscribed both PORTUGAL and AÇORES.
