British Forces in Egypt

The first British troops went to Egypt in 1888 in order to suppress a military uprising against the Turkish Sultan.  They remained in Egypt until after the end of the 1st World War.  Egypt gained independence in 1922, but the British troops remained under a treaty signed in 1936 in order to assist in defending the Suez Canal.
