The Kingdom of Bahrain is a small Arab monarchy in the Persian Gulf. It consists of many islands. Its capital is Manama. In the late 1800’s it became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. It declared independence in 1971 and in 2002 was declared a Kingdom.
The first Post Office opened in Manama in 1884 and this remained the only Post Office until 1946. Stamps of British India were used in Bahrain until the country began issuing its own stamps in 1960. The British India stamps were overprinted for use in the country. The first stamps designed for both domestic and international use were issued in 1960 with Arabic text on the top of the stamp.
