Officially known as the Plurinational State of Bolivia, this country is situated in central South America. It is bordered to the north by Brazil, to the south-east by Paraguay, to the southwest by Chile, and to the north-west by Peru. It is a landlocked country which means it has no border with the ocean.
Politically, it is a democratic republic, with its judicial capital in Sucre and its administrative capital in La Paz.
Bolivia has produced its own stamps since 1867. In 1926, the “Gate of the sun” set of 19 stamps was authorised to commemorate Bolivia’s independence. The stamps were printed in Germany and when it was discovered that the stamps had been sold in Europe without permission, the rest had to be locked in a bank vault for 35 years. When they were eventually release in 1960, inflation which had caused havoc to the Bolivian currency, needed to be surcharged, sometimes to 10 000 times their original denomination.
