The Republic of Cape Verde is a group of islands situated off the north west coast of Africa, to the west of Senegal and Mauritania. The capital city is Praia. Since 2013, the country decided that the name Republic of Cabo Verde is to be used and not translated into any other language. The islands were first discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century. In 1951, they were incorporated as an overseas department of Portugal, but independence was peacefully achieved in 1975.
The first stamps were issued by Cape Verde in 1877. Stamps of Cape Verde were used from 1877 until 1881 in Portuguese Guinea. Since 1975 the Republic of Cape Verde has issued its own stamps.
