The Federated Malay States were a protectorate of the United Kingdom from 1895 – 1946 and consisted of the states of Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak and Selangor in south-east Asia. After several changes and additions of other territories, the area became known as the Malayan Union in 1946, then the Federation of Malaya and finally in 1963 Malaysia. Separate issues for each of these states appeared in 1935. The capital was Kuala Lumpur.
The first stamps of the Malayan States were often overprints on issues from the Straits Settlements. From 1900, the four states used stamps issued in the name of the Federated Malay States which were used until 1935.
