The Republic of Guinea, situated on the west coast of Africa, was formerly known as French Guinea. It is bordered in the northwest by Guinea Bissau and in the north by Senegal, in the west by Mali and Cote d’Ivoire, in the south by Liberia and Sierra Leone. The Atlantic Ocean is on its west coast. France made Guinea a part of French West Africa at the end of the 19th century. In 1958, the French withdrew after the country voted to become independent. The country followed the Soviet Union and adopted socialist policies.
From 1887 to 1892 stamps of Senegal were used. After 1906 the stamps issued were inscribed “Guinee” as well as “Afrique Occidentale Francaise” or “AOF”, to show that French Guinea was part of French West Africa. From 1944, the stamps of French Guinea were replaced by those of French West Africa until independence in 1959.
