From 1892 to 1905, Funchal was the administrative title of Madeira.  It is the largest city and today the capital of Madeira which is one of two autonomous regions of Portugal.

Postage stamps for Funchal inscribed with the city’s name were issued for Madeira from 1892 until 1905.  From 1868 until 1881, Madeira had used overprinted stamps of Portugal. Only 34 stamps were ever issued for Funchal, all showing the portrait of King Carlos I.
