
Georgia is a small country situated between western Asia and eastern Europe. The Black Sea is situated on its west coast, Russia is in the north, Turkey and Armenia are in the west and Azerbaijan is situated in the south. The capital of the country is Tbilisi.
After the Russian Revolution in 1917, Georgia briefly became independent. In 1922 it became part of the Transcaucasian Federation which was a founding republic of the Soviet Union. Since then there was much turmoil and corruption. Eventually in 1991, Georgia became independent of the Soviet Union.
Since the end of the 20th Century, Georgia has become medically famous, having developed a cure (called “phage” treatment) for people with illnesses resistant to antibiotics. Patients from all over the world travel to Georgia for this treatment which has cured many dying people.
Georgia issued its first stamps in 1919, followed by a 2nd issue in 1921. When it became part of the Soviet Union in 1922, there was a further issue of stamps. Thereafter stamps of the Soviet Union were used. Since 1993, Georgia has once again issued its own stamps.
